Makalu Base Camp & Barun Valley one of the most fascinating and adventurous trek with a traverse of high passes crossing Tutu-la and Shipton la at over
4, 200 meters passes. Makalu Base Camp & Barun Valley adventure starts from the small airstrip at Tumlingtar on the warm sub-tropic area on the shelf of Arun River, this awesome trek concludes back at Tumlingtar, the trek is moderate  in the beginning and to adventurous where all types of travelers can join in this wonderful walking journey and the time duration taking just a little more than two weeks in the comfort of warm cozy camping along the route. 
Makalu Base Camp & Barun Valley is the least visited destination as it is located in the Far North East Himalaya of Khumbakarna range of mountains east to Everest and west from Kanchenjunga range, one of the most unique journeys leading from mediterranean of mid hills to arctic landscapes and climate zone, all these drastic change in temperature found only in the high valleys and mountains of high hills and valleys of southern Himalaya area with dramatic change in vegetations and its awesome scenery.
 
This trek leads through many traditional Rai, Gurung, Sherpa villages famous as mountaineers and warm hospitality and has been a high altitude porters and guides since last five decades.
 
This remarkable trek starts from Tumlingtar town the gateway to Makalu, Everest and Kanchenjunga area and then over to amazing Barun Valley and to Sherson, with rest day for proper acclimatization and then heading higher to Makalu Base Camp through the scenic spot at Sherson with tremendous views overlooking top world’s highest peaks from Everest, Lhotse, Makalu to Khumbukarna range of mountains then over the high Tutula and Shipton- la  to reach our destination at world’s 5th highest Mountain base camp at 5, 120 meters and then climb up to view points for more panorama, and then slowly ending this beautiful and awesome trekking at scenic valley at Barun valley and back at Tumlingtar for the scenic sweeping short flight back to Kathmandu for your international flight after a memorable time with Solukhumbu Treks & Expedition trekking Makalu Base Camp & Barun Valley.
 
Day 01:            Arrival at Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
Day 02:            Fly to Tumlingtar 950m and drive to Num 1,500m - 05 hours.
Day 03:            Trek to Sedua 1,493m. - 05 hours.
Day 04:            Trek to Tashi Gaon 2,200m - 04 hours.
Day 05:            Trek to Kohma Danda 3,500m - 05 hours
Day 06:            Trek to Mumbuk 3,400m - 06 hours.
Day 07:            Trek to Nehe Kharka 3,750m - 06 hours.
Day 08:            Trek to Sherson 4,600m - 05 hours.

MAKALU-BARUN NATIONAL PARK & CONSERVATION AREA:

AREA ( 2,330 SQ. KMS.)
 
LOCATION:             The Park and Conservation Area are situated in the Sankhuwasabha and Solu Khumbu Districts, bordered by the Arun River on the east, Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park on the west, the Nepal-China border on the north and Saune Danda (ridge) to the south.
 
FEATURES: This is the only protected area in Nepal with a strict nature reserve. The park has some of the richest and unique pockets of plants and animals, elsewhere lost to spreading human habitation.
 
Steeping up the slopes are a series of vegetation zones starting with tropical sal forests below 1,000 m elevation; subtropical Schima-Castanopsis forests at 1,000 - 2,000 m, fir/birch/rhododendron forests in the sub-alpine ( 3,000 - 4,000 m); and herbs, grasses and rhododendron/juniper shrubs in the alpine pastures ( 4,000 - 5,000 m). There are 47 varieties of orchids, 67 species of economically valuable medicinal and aromatic plants, 25 of Nepal’s 30 varieties of rhododendron, 19 species of bamboo, 15 oaks including Arkhoulo, 86 species of fodder trees and 48 species of primrose. Over 400 species of birds have been sighted in the Makalu-Barun area, including two species never before seen in Nepal, the spotted wren babbler and the olive ground warbler.
 
Wildlife includes the endangered red panda, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, clouded leopard and possibly the snow leopard, in addition to more substantial populations of ghoral, Himalayan thar, wild boar, barking deer, Himalayan marmot and weasel, common languor monkey and the serow.
 
The Arun River system contains 84 varieties of fish. Some 32,000 people inhabit the conservation area.

Day 01:           Meet in Kathmandu after arrival from international flight.
Rendezvous in Kathmandu where you will be joined with other members of the trekking team on reaching respective hotels, our guide or group leader will brief information regarding your trekking with do’s and don’ts.
 
Day 02:           Fly to Tumlingtar 40 minutes flight and drive to Num 1,500 m.
Early morning transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for the super scenic flight to Tumlingtar to start the adventure to Makalu base camp with awesome panorama views array of snow capped mountains from Ganesh-Langtang-Jugal Himal, Gaurishanker, Numbur and Mt. Everest with Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu after this short flight of 40 minutes reaching at Tumlingtar in the warm sub-tropical area, located on a plateau above Arun River with views of Mt. Makalu.
 
From Tumlingtar starting the morning with a scenic interesting drive heading to the mid hills passing many farm villages and the large town of Khandbari, drive continues on the hill ridge rough dirt road leading higher to Chinchela village from here a long descend to Num village slowly turning into a town with the motor reaching this village few years back, at Num overnight in lodge or in tents with grand views of surrounding landscapes and peaks of Jalajala Himal and Makalu.
 
Day 03:           Trek to Sedua 1,493m - 05 hours.
Today a first day walk which is a moderate day but with downs and ups to Sedua village, starting with a steep descend to the bridge over raging Arun River around this place quite tropical, and then with a climb towards farm fields and small villages of Runmura, here with lunch break and then with a gradual climb to reach overnight stop at Sedua village, a small place with primary school and small  health post with views of Num across the ridge and of other adjoining hills of Bhojpur and Jalajala rocky peaks.
  
Day 04:           Trek to Tashi Gaon 2,200m - 04 hours.
After Sedua village, morning walk is quite gentle on undulating winding trail to Tashigaon a Sherpa village, the last village for many days till we get back after Makalu base camp trek, walking through farm areas with terraces of millet, a major crops after rice and wheat’s of this area, and then for 3-4 hours of good trek reaching at Tashigaon for lunch and overnight camp with time to visit the local village around, which is quite interesting. The Sherpa of this area is quite different to Khumbu highlanders.
 
Day 05:           Trek to Kohma Danda 3,500m - 05 hours
Leaving the last village of Tashigaon, morning walk leads to a gradual path into dense forest of rhododendron, oaks and tall pines trees passing many cattle herder’s temporary shelters of shades and stone huts after few hours of pleasant walk stopping for lunch on the grassy meadow and summer pasture ground.
Afternoon with a steep climb for 2-3 hours to reach the Kohma ridge top, slowly the tall trees give away for smaller rhododendron and juniper bushes and small birch trees. This high ridge offers excellent views of Kanchenjunga mountain range and of Mt. Makalu and adjoining peaks, from here in complete wilderness for week.
 
Day 06:           Trek to Mumbuk 3,400m - 06 hours.
From Kohma danda morning walk leads on the ridge line on a plateau like landscapes follows gradual path with few ups and down reaching at icy ponds of Thulo Pokhari (big pond) with Sano Pokhari(small pond) after crossing Tutu-la and Shipton la at over
4, 200 meters passes. Probably a lunch break here in this isolated surronding, and then heading downhill reaching the tree lines of dense forest with views of Khumbakarna Himal range of mountains towards north, overnight camp on finding a level ground in the midst of tall tree lines.
 
Day 07:           Trek to Nehe Kharka 3,750m - 06 hours.
Today walks leads to unique Barun valley for its rare species of vegetation and plants and for other flora-fauna, starting with a descend for an hour and crossing a small stream to reach the valley floor, the walk is on gentle up slope with views of unnamed peaks on the both side of this valley passing few Sheppard’s shelters and a small Buddhist Gompa (monastery) built out of stones and muds from the soil of this area. After a good walk of 5-6 hours reaching at Nehe Kharka for overnight camp in the middle of Barun valley.
 
Day 08:           Trek to Sherson 4,600m - 05 hours.
From Barun valley walking to reach at Sehrson at the end of the North West valley near Makalu base camp our highlight and goal of this wonderful adventure, the walk is on gentle up slopes through few vegetations of bushes of dwarf rhododendron, juniper and crossing streams with great views ahead of Mt. Makalau and Barntse peaks and after a nice walk of 5 hours reaching at our destination at Sherson for two nights camp. Here a pasture land of villages from Novagaon and Tashigaon area.


Day 09:           At Sherson for a hike to Makalu base camp 5,120 m.
Here beneath the towering Makalu and Baruntse peaks at 7,220 meters with peak 4. Today a hike in the morning leaving the camp at Sherson for few hours to reach our destination to Makalu base camp with closer view of Mt. Makalu, Barun Pokhari and the view of the rare face of Everest the Kanshung face with Lhotse nearby, an hour of steep up brings you to the large meadow where you can walk further up to have a greater view of the peaks of this area and beyond. After an enjoyable moment with picturesque scenery of mountains that encircles this spot and returning back to camp at Sherson.
 
Day 10:           Trek to Yangre Kharka 3,645m - 06 hours.
Retrace the journey back on the Barun valley to Yangre Kharka enclosed with high mountain cliffs and views of cascading waterfalls after a descend reaching the overnight camp at cow herders temporary summer grazing place at Yangrekharka.
 
Day 11:           Trek to Mumbuk - 05 hours.
After a wonderful time at Barun valley, today walks leaving the last of this valley with a climb to reach back to dense forest and to Mumbuk for overnight camp.
 
Day 12:           Trek to Kohma Ridge - 05 hours.
On the same trail back to Kohma ridge morning walk with a climb for an hour or more through forest on reaching the hill top ridge leaving the tree lines, and passing the ponds and over Tutu la and Shipton la reaching at Kohma ridge for overnight camp.
 
Day 13:           Trek to Nawa Gaon 2,500m via Tashi Gaon -06 hours.
Morning walk heading downhill and back to thick forest and tree lines reaching back to villages and farm fields, from Tashigaon taking different higher route to Nawa gaon village, through cool shade of woodlands and farm terraces and then reaching a large Sherpa village of Nawagaon for overnight stop, with time in the afternoon to visit this nice traditional farm village.

Day 14:           Trek to Num via Sedua - 06 hours.
From Nawagaon morning walk leads to descent reaching at Sedua gaon after a rest here continue downhill on steep slope to Arun river here crossing the bridge a steep climb for few hours brings to Num for last overnight camp in the mid hills of Makalu area.

Day 15:           Drive to Tumlingtar via Khadbari 3-4 hours.
After a wonderful time in the high hills and mountains and in rural villages, from here with a drive on rough jeep road, but interesting going through many farm villages and with beautiful scenery of surrounding green landscapes and snow capped peaks in the distance, after few hours of drive reaching at a large town of Khadbari the major town and headquarter of Sanka Sambua district in Makalu region. From here an hour of descend brings back to Tumlingtar in the comfort of nice simple lodge.
 
Day 16:           Fly to Kathmandu rest of the day free for individual activities.
As per the flight time to Kathmandu, a short walk to Tumlingtar airport terminal in the morning, on boarding the plane 40 minutes of sweeping flight with parallel views of mountains all the way to Kathmandu, at Kathmandu transfer to hotel after a short drive around Thamel area, with whole day free as per the time of return flight from Tumlingtar.
 
Day 17:           In Kathmandu with cultural tour at places of interest.
This day reserved a free day in case of flight delay at Tumlingtar due to bad weather conditions, and one can join for sightseeing tour at leisure, depart hotel for few hours in our interesting cultural tour of heritage sites as Kathmandu valley is full of world heritage sites, however some of them been damaged from recent earthquake.
 
The  tour of holy Pashupatinath temple, Bouddhanath ( Little Tibet), Swayambhunath ( Monkey Temple) & monasteries, ancient Kings Palaces and courtyard in Kathmandu; after an interesting sightseeing back to the hotel, afternoon free at leisure for individual activities.
 
Day 18:           International departure for home ward bound.
After a great memorable time and experience with Solukhumbu Treks & Expedition, depart from the hotel to the airport for final departure homeward bound or to respective destinations.
